An attribution is a statement that provides credit to an original creator and helps others locate source material as needed. If you would like to attribute content that you find in our Digital Collections, we suggest the following long form and short form methods:
Long form attribution:
Please include:
- Creator's name.
- Year created.
- Title.
- Item ID.
- License for use if applicable.
- Source of the original item.
- Any modification made as permitted by copyright holder.
Preferred attribution format:
"Title", YYYY, [Item ID] by First name Last Name, is used under [license, if applicable]. Courtesy of [Collection name], University of Calgary. Modifications to this image include [description].
Examples:
"'Jo Fox' ridden by Andy Newell at Calgary Exhibition and Stampede", 19??, [NA-3164-40] by W.J. Oliver. Courtesy of Digital Collections, University of Calgary. Modifications to this image include cropping.
"Bombus balteatus", 2019, [B.balteatus.M] by Tegan Barry, is used under CC-BY-NC license. Courtesy of Digital Collections, University of Calgary. Modifications to this image include cropping and colour desaturation.
Short form attribution:
If you don't have the space, try to include these minimum components:
- Creator
- Source
- Item ID
- License
Preferred attribution format:
Image by [Creator] via University of Calgary [Collection name]: ID #.
Examples:
Image by W.J. Oliver via Digital Collections, University of Calgary: ID NA-3164-40.
Image by Tegan Barry via Digital Collections, University of Calgary: ID B.balteatus.M. Licensed under CC-BY-NC.
