Yes, you can! When you archive your thesis in The Vault, you agree to a non-exclusive distribution license. The essential elements of this license are:
- You retain copyright to your thesis
- You license the University of Calgary to preserve your thesis and disseminate it for research and private study purposes through our repository
Most publishers consider theses unpublished works, so disseminating in the repository is not usually considered prior publication. But do check the publisher policies and contact your preferred journals if you have questions. Some publishers do a plagiarism check in a service like Turnitin, so if the text in your article is very close to your thesis, it may be flagged. Again, this is something to check up on with your preferred journal so that you are aware of any changes that you may need to make to get elements of your thesis "journal ready."
