1. Getting Started: What can I search for?

Our search tools provide access to a massive range of materials divided into two main categories:

  • Our Collections: Books, e-books, journals, audio/video media, archives, and digital collections.
  • Articles & Databases: Peer-reviewed journal articles, legal documents, newspapers, and magazines.

2. Which "Search Scope" should I choose?

Think of a "scope" as a filter for where the search engine looks. Choose the one that fits your current goal:

Scope Best Used For...
Quick Search Finding specific titles or a mix of books and articles. Great for starting research.
Online Only Finding digital materials you can access immediately from home.
U of C Collections Items physically in our branches, plus our institutional repositories and archives.
Reserves Finding textbooks or materials put aside specifically for your course.
Beyond U of C Searching other libraries via Interlibrary Loan.

3. When is "Quick Search" the best option?

Quick Search is our most popular tool. Use it if you are looking for a specific title, need a mix of formats, or are just starting out.

Pro Tip: Quick Search doesn't see everything. For deep, discipline-specific research, use our Databases list. Also, sign in! Some resources only display to University of Calgary users who are logged in.

4. What is included in the "University of Calgary Collections"?

This scope focuses on our local footprint and is divided into four areas:

  • Physical Collections: The "catalogue" of items sitting on our library shelves.
  • PRISM: Our institutional repository for U of C theses and academic works.
  • Archives: Unique materials held in Archives and Special Collections.
  • Digital Collections: Locally digitized materials and historical records.
