Primary sources are original documents created by witnesses or observers who experienced the events or conditions being documented, and are typically created contemporaneously to the event.

Secondary sources are books, articles, or other sources that analyze, interpret, and summarize information from primary sources about a topic, but does not have direct, first-hand evidence.

The Primary Sources Guide is an excellent place to start in understanding what primary and secondary sources are, as well as how to find primary sources related to your subject or topic. If you are an undergrad looking for research support throughout your degree such as how to find primary and secondary sources, check out our myLibrarian Program or book a librarian consult.
