How do I cite archival material?

Answer

For archival material, it is important to note the following information when citing it:

  • Archival repository

  • Fonds/collection title

  • Author/creator of the item

  • Format of the item

  • Box and file that the item is located in

  • Date of creation for the item

For materials held at the University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections, use the following format for archival repositories:

  • [Archival Repository], Archives and Special Collections, University of Calgary.

  • e.g. Glenbow Library and Archives, Archives and Special Collections, University of Calgary.

UCalgary Archives & Special Collections has a guide to citation that you can access here which contains links to guides on specific citation styles.
